Triger-Happy Policeman Shoots Helpless Man In Lekki

An unidentified policeman has reportedly shot an innocent civilian in Lekki area of Lagos state.
According to a video of the incident obtained by Sahara Reporters, the unarmed civilian was shot outside the gates of Chevy View Estate on October 8.
The wounded man, John Membu, who explained how the incident happened, said that his human rights had been violated when the police officer aimed his gun at him for no real reason.

Membu explained that he was driving towards the estate after attending a friend’s wedding and on arriving at the gates, he discovered that a truck carrying iron rods had blocked traffic.
The truck which had been denied entry into the estate, had two police escorts who appeared unhappy with the residents’ refusal to open the gates.
Mr Membu noted further that the policeman got angrier when one of the resident warned them that their action was unacceptable, and threatened to “deal”, and he immediately cocked his gun.
“As soon as he drew his gun, I moved away from the truck and towards the gate of the estate. I heard a loud gunshot ring out, and ran toward the security post near the gate.

“I suddenly felt a numbness in my right leg, and was puzzled, because I did not recall running into a hard object,” he narrated.
The victim explained that a bullet had hit his leg and he was only saved by the residents of the estate who rushed him to the Udeco Medical Center where he was treated.
Membu was discharged after spending two weeks in the hospital and paid his hospital bill of N347,000, since the police ignored his request about who pays the bills.
He reckons that the police visited him only three times.
Still narrating his ordeal, Membu said: “I am shocked, upset, and disappointed. I have never felt more acutely how meaningless my life is as a Nigerian citizen,” describing himself as “one of the lucky police shooting victims, because I am alive.”
Only recently,were arrested by the police.
