Luck however ran out on the suspected armed robber when the
newscaster (name withheld) over powered the suspect and raised alarm
which drew the attention of residents to her rescue.
It was learnt that the residents subsequently apprehended the armed
robber and beat him up to a pulp before he was handed over to the
police.
Following the suspect’s confession, the police began a manhunt for
other members his gang and five of them were arrested while the leader
of the gang is still at large.
Narrating how the suspected armed robber attempted to rob her, the
newscaster who requested anonymity said she was caught unawares but she
summoned courage and wrestled the gun from the armed robber before
shouting for help.
She said: “I came to Benin from Lagos to attend a wedding and on
Monday morning, I decided to go back. I woke up that fateful day and had
my bath about5am. I wanted to hit the road on time so I can arrive
early for my work.
“At about 5:30am, I came out to where I parked my car so I can
clean the car, but as I was cleaning, I heard someone telling me to keep
quiet. He has been hiding behind my car all this while waiting and he
came out with a gun.
“He pointed the gun to my waist and whispered to me to take him
inside the house and give him money. I started begging him that I will
give him money. I also appealed to him that my sister whom I lodged with
is heavily pregnant and may go into force labour if she sees the gun.
He was not interested in my plea and he held the gun tightly to my
waist.
“As we got close to the entrance of the sitting room where my bag
was, I summoned courage and screamed Jesus!; at that moment, I don’t
know what came over me and I turned round and grabbed the gun but he
held tight to it. I struggled with him and turned the gun to his chest.
He bit me and I bit him in return.
“I wrestled with him and we landed back at the point we started
from my car. I screamed and started calling for help. My brother in-law
ran out and held him and kicked the armed robber until he fell flat on
his face.

“Other residents ran-out and joined in wrestling the gun from
him. I eventually collected the gun from him after much struggle. The
resident beat him mercilessly and wanted to kill him but I pleaded with
them to allow the police to arrest him. The police later came and took
him away. I am grateful to God for victory over the devils.”
It was gathered that the resident recovered a locally made gun, three
cartridges, a wallet, phone and wristwatch from the suspect.
